A promise to add sugar

I was talking to Rob about the blog yesterday, and it occurred to me that I may be bumming some people out. Since my hiatus I’ve lamented the shutdown of bookstores, declared that the girl you met in such a bookstore may not be as high quality as she seems, and then I burst some bubbles by posting that no matter what you say to women, you simply won’t be good-looking enough for some of them.

I’m a journalist at heart, and now that I’m no longer selling my social-coaching services (aside from the occasional student), I feel even more compelled to keep things real for you. There’s a lot of one-sided marketing hype out there toward inexperienced men — not just in the Community, though it is a shining example — and I want to call bullshit whenever it’s needed. Kind of like how Penn & Teller do with fellow magicians.

Broccoli! You know you want some!

The downside of this is that the marketers, who promise you all the hot young women you want if you just buy their product, are selling you sugar, while I’m offering broccoli. One is much healthier than the other, but when I’m faced with the choice of a green salad or a Three Musketeers bar, good health often loses out.

(Actually, I will soon be posting a rant about how terrible sugar is for us, and how it even corrodes our social lives, so I’m not joking around.)

Keeping this in mind, I renew my vow to balance out my sobering posts with sweet ones that are fun or inspiring. I do have such stories to tell, and I think they’re all the more encouraging because they show you don’t need all the hype and the weird techniques to make things happen.

Except, that is, for the logistics book that Rob and I are writing. You totally will need to buy that.

I hope I’m not asking a question thats already been asked 100 times, but when (ballpark) do you think your book will be ready for the press?

It’s a good question, Tom. Our project has taken some twists and turns as we figure out the best way to write the book — most of what we’ve written so far ended up becoming another book. So we’re farther behind than I’d like. But I think we can get it wrapped by the end of the year — maybe sooner. We’ll keep you posted.

After reading your previous post I think you’re perfectly entitled to express what your beliefs along with Anna are Greg. Sure its not ideal hearing that women judge us on our looks but we all judge others on their appearance. So for me to get offended or become disappointed is an unhealthy way of hiding from reality.

While I fully agree we judge others by sight before anything, I do feel last impressions matter more. Take me for example, ever since I knew who they were I have disliked the look of Charlie Fink (lead singer of Noah and The Whale) but once I listened to his music my perception of him grew. It’s the same with others. Looks will form attraction but if you possess the personality of a doorknob then your appearance won’t go so far. Being controversial is what keeps us coming here to read your thoughts Greg so in no way should anyone tell you to hold back or change your tune. If we can’t deal with or accept your opinion then it’s best we don’t come on here.
Gavin made a good point when he said girls will like you and dislike you. It works both ways.

Finally, since I kept this post a lot briefer than I’d hoped, I wanted to suggest perhaps Rob and you could give us a taste of what would be in the book at some stage? Maybe an extract from the book? Think about it anyway as it’ll help appeal to those of us who may be uncertain we want to buy it. And in no way am I doubting your credentials Greg!

Thanks for the encouragement, Barry! Rest assured, I will be offending my readers for much longer!

As for the book, it’s premature to be releasing excerpts yet, but we definitely will be down the road. So stay tuned.

These nutritious broccoli posts are exactly the kind of tribute I was hoping for Dirk Manley a few months ago. I think his mentality of “she’s either into you, or not” would gel with this and your attraction pie chart posts.

Thanks GK for keeping his spirit alive with these “dose of reality about game” posts!
