The News about Dirk Manley

by GK on January 16, 2011 · 7 comments

This has been a painful day for me. Earlier today, I read a blog post regarding the apparent death of my friend and fellow blogger, Dirk Manley. It appears to be written by his girlfriend and explains that Dirk was killed by a drunk driver while walking home.

Dirk, who has guest-blogged for me and whom I’ve admired since my Charisma Arts days, was days from recording a podcast with me and Rob — in fact he had e-mailed me about it just hours before his apparent death. I don’t have a phone number to call, so I can’t confirm the news, and I pray this is just a bad joke, but it looks real to me.

I haven’t collected all my thoughts about this yet, but I’ll have more to say in a couple of days. Until then, I mourn the loss of a great guy.

I still cant belive it, its a tragedy..
I loved his blog, he gave good advise, had a good writing and
he seemed to be a nice guy who lived his life…

Greg, I’m praying this is just a joke or a post that’s a way of showing us how fast our lives can change, really I am. No matter what he wrote about he always had a way of putting steel in my spine. God I hope this is just a joke.

I wish this was an elaborate hoax that he was doing to just end his blog. I’m stunned.

It’s not a joke, guys. Dirk’s girlfriend confirmed it to me from Dirk’s e-mail address. She added that the person responsible is in police custody. That’s all I know.

As senseless as this is, I think it only underscores Dirk’s mantra of taking chances in life. Because it’s the only life we’ve got.

I’ll have more to say this week.

“Senseless” is a really good word to describe this. I’m absolutely saddened at my very core by this news. My heart goes out to his loved ones. He was a one-of-a-kind guy “online.” I can only imagine how devastated those that knew him “offline” feel.

It’s really a shame. I remember Dirk from my old CA days from when he would post on the old forum. I know that I even PMed him a few times to compliment him on the good advice he gave. I always thought that he had a very positive outlook and I’m sure that he has helped tons of guys through the years by writing down his own thoughts.

My thoughts go out to his friends and family during their difficult time. I hope they know how much of a positive effect he had on everyone.
